Dynamic symmetry is a family of proportional construction methods that uses root rectangles, diagonals and reciprocal lines to organize related positions and directions inside a frame.
Jay Hambidge developed and promoted the system in the early twentieth century, giving artists a practical language of root rectangles, reciprocal diagonals and rhythmic relationships.

01 · THE SYSTEM
A basic modular grid repeats a unit. Dynamic symmetry begins with the proportion of the frame, then extends its diagonals and reciprocal relationships. Their intersections create positions that are geometrically connected to the rectangle rather than evenly spaced by default.

Jay Hambidge published Dynamic Symmetry in 1920 and The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry in 1926. He presented the method as a way to recover proportional order he associated with Greek art and nature. Later scholarship studies both the reach of those ideas and the historical claims behind them.
A designer can test the geometry without accepting every historical argument made for it.
