What is
harmonic composition?

In Norma, harmonic composition is a living design language that uses measurable ratios, directions and repeated relationships to organize a visual field.

A ratio defines a division; an armature unfolds it into positions and directions; the composition brings those relationships together as hierarchy, rhythm and meaning.

The term is defined here in Norma’s practical design context.

Drawing geometry…
A harmonic armatureOne ratio extended into a relational field
Ratio
A measurable comparison
Armature
A spatial network derived from relationships
Composition
The hierarchy and meaning created with those tools

01 · FIVE LAYERS

Five layers of
one harmonic field.

Mathematical ratio
A numerical relationship such as 3:2, √3:1 or φ:1.
Frame
The boundary in which the relationship operates.
Armature
Lines, points, circles or subdivisions generated from geometric rules.
Snap target
A relation a gesture can approach during direct manipulation.
Composition
The actual ordering of visual weight, hierarchy, rhythm, color and content.

02 · COHERENCE

Repetition creates
rhythm and coherence.

When margins, regions and type scales share a relationship, the composition gains a recognizable pulse. Controlled contrast—a dominant field, a bright interval or a generous area of space—turns that pulse into movement and visual life.

03 · SYSTEMS

Several routes
to structure.

SystemWhat it controlsWhat it does not decide
ThirdsSimple equal placement zones.Fine proportional relationships.
Golden ratioMajor/minor relationships and recursion.Whether φ suits the content.
Root rectanglesDirectional and reciprocal constructions.Visual importance of each element.
Modular gridRepeated cells and alignment.Which cells should remain empty.
Free divisionAuthored hierarchy by direct gesture.Whether the gesture is coherent without comparison.

04 · JUDGMENT

The hidden system
keeps the work in tune.

When the grid is hidden, its proportions continue through the alignments, intervals and scale changes it established. The structure becomes an invisible support that keeps the finished work coherent.

A grid is a score for visual rhythm.

The finished work makes that rhythm visible through an order of attention.

05 · QUESTIONS

Define the terms.

Is harmonic composition a single formal system?

No. The phrase is used in several contexts. Norma uses it practically for measurable relationships that help organize a composition.

How can harmonic ratios contribute to beauty?

A harmonic ratio gives hierarchy, color and spacing a shared rhythm, helping a skilled composition feel coherent, balanced and alive.

What is the difference between a ratio and an armature?

A ratio compares quantities. An armature turns one or more relationships into lines, points or regions inside a frame.

What is a snap target?

It is a valid geometric relation that a gesture can approach or lock onto during construction.

Measure the relation.
Compose the harmony.

Use proportion to connect every scale of the work, from the frame to the smallest interval.
