The golden ratio
in graphic design.
The golden ratio is φ = (1 + √5) / 2 ≈ 1.6180339887. In design, it can relate lengths, divisions and areas inside a composition.
Its self-similar relationship lets a designer echo one harmonious proportion from the whole composition down to its smallest intervals.

A relationship
that repeats.
Divide a line into a larger part a and a smaller part b. The division is golden when (a + b) / a = a / b = φ. A golden rectangle keeps the same proportion after a square is removed from it.

Matila Ghyka described the golden section as a “principal invariant” connecting patterns of living growth with artistic proportion. In graphic design, that recurring relationship can unite frame, fields, margins and type scales so that every part answers the whole.
A golden spiral makes the recursion visible, while a simple golden division can carry the same proportional rhythm without drawing the curve.
